Jesus called the apostles and said, “You know that the rulers of nations have absolute power over people and their officials have absolute authority over people. But that’s not the way it’s going to be among you. Whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant. Whoever wants to be most important among you will be your slave. It’s the same way with the Son of Man. He didn’t come so that others could serve him. He came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people.”
Christ has commissioned the church to serve. Christ the Servant Evangelical Covenant Church meets weekly at Santa Fe Trail Middle School: 1100 N. Ridgeview Olathe, Kansas 66061.
Our mission: Serving hope in our neighborhood and our world. As a gathering of Christ followers we will engage our community in missional service and offer unsuspecting acceptance to all we encounter. We are all children of God who seek Hope, Love and Purpose. The scriptures call us to be Salt to the Earth and a Light to our World.
The historical character of the Covenant Church has been about missional work. Since the days the denomination was known as the Mission Friends the Evangelical Covenant Church has concerned itself with helping the hurting and sharing the words of hope found in the Gospel. Christ the Servant seeks to reclaim that ethos. Our goal is to lead with service in our community by motivating and equipping our membership to offer aid to our neighborhoods and our world.
Our first question will always be: Where do you serve? We believe that the best expression of the life of Jesus is found in his uncanny ability to see the hurting around him, identify their needs, and offer hope through compassion, mercy and justice.
Yet Jesus did not only offer physical emancipation from the suffering of the world, Jesus offered the good life. The Gospel captures these words and the character of a good life; a life marked by
- serving others
That life is intended to extend beyond our physical existence to eternity. Jesus’ message also contained words of eternal life. We recognize that Jesus calls us from a life of self service to a new life.
So Christ the Servant will help its members to engage this new life in two ways:
- First, we will encourage and equip our members for service in the community. We believe that our service opportunities should include meeting felt needs as well as advocacy and social action.
- Second, we will seek to better understand how to live out the Biblical life in a contemporary setting. The scriptures are an ancient document. The language in which they were written and many of the Cultures contained in the Biblical text are long gone. To properly understand how the Bible applies to us today we need to study, question and dialogue about these sacred words.
Weekly we will seek to better understand and apply the teachings found in the Bible. That study should not only influence how we think, but also how we act.
We invite all who would like to make their neighborhood and their world a better place and seek to understand the teachings of Jesus to join us.
